The Resort 2024 collection marks Rosie Assoulin’s 10th anniversary. Thecollection began as a reflection on the creative process, and offers duelingperspectives – starting with a rigid and structured approach and eventuallyreaching a loosening and creative freedom found in the abstract. Yin / Yangdresses and coats in double faced black and white twills with a turn back bindingfinish and open the collection. A water motif is carried throughout, representingthe movement, a will to push through, and the flow that is so deeply embedded inthe process. Vivid Rorschach prints are woven throughout the collection – an homage toRosie’s beginnings 10 years ago, when homemade, rainbow colored Rorschachprints covered her son’s bedroom, where she developed her first collection. Theynow serve to initiate a conversation around creative expression, visualinterpretation, and our layers of perceptions. The creative journey can be non-linear, and the destination is often unforeseen –extrinsic perception influences results. It's during the processes thatinterpretation, and departures from our daily realities, take place. Rosie invites usinto that intimate, dreamlike state, introducing her interpretive Rorschachs, andthen dropping us into an alternative escape. Robert Rauschenberg inspiredchevron stripes are met with nautical nods– relaxed suiting and soft tailoring insailor and cabana pool stripes, using an assortment of fabrics including utilitycottons, seersucker, khakis and double faced blends. Souvenir shop style vinylseashell embroideries offer a playful wink, a signature Rosie perspective. The lines between day and evening are blurred– silver lamés are presented ineffortless daytime silhouettes, while cocktail gowns are offered in poplins andutility fabrications accented with drawstrings– flipping the notion of what is andwhat can be. Like Rouchenberg’s The 1⁄4 Mile, the process is riddled with beauty, frustration, heartbreak and, then, discovery – it’s unpredictable and nuanced, never linearnor arriving at a final destination. The results are always up for consideration, butthe process requires bravery and will. For both the creative actor and creativeobserver, discovery drives the energy to continue moving forward.
